Rebecca McEvoy-Halston

Calgary Board of Education (20 years)
NABT Outstanding Biology teacher for Canada. 2012

Rebecca, Ms. Mac to her students, is loved by her students from Bowness and William Aberhart . She consistently receives rave reviews from the RTD participants! She is an award winning teacher with a concise, fun, personable classroom style. Rebecca brings over 20 years of experience to RTD – including teaching gifted students in the GATE program and developing the Biology 30 Diploma exam for the Alberta Government. Outside of the classroom Rebecca loves hiking and biking in the mountains, travelling around the world, and watching Big Bang Theory. She describes herself in her own words below:

I received the Alberta Innovative Teaching Award from the ASCD (Alberta Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) in 1999.

My teaching philosophy in a nutshell - I am an adaptive and dynamic educator with a proven ability to motivate and empower students to achieve their potential. I strive to create a fun, rigorous, student centered learning environment where students are active (not passive) learners who feel safe to make mistakes. Students remember how they FEEL in a classroom more so than what they learned. I differentiate my teaching methods for individual learning styles, accommodating exceptionalities, and routinely incorporate technology in the classroom. I am a life longer learner and actively seek out professional development opportunities to evolve my teaching practice.

In conclusion, teaching is not my job - it is my life. I am thankful for the “ah ha” moments when a student finally understands a difficult concept or “I never liked/understood science until now.” This is what keeps me coming to work every day.
